| What makes Walt Disney World in Orlando, Florida so special to me is the amazing varieties of plants that you can find in it. It's almost as if you have stepped foot in the most incredible garden in the world. In many way, you have! Disney has paid so much attention and details into the types of plants that they have planted at Walt Disney World that it is really worth a visit to the theme park just to observe the fauna. he landscaping at Disney World, in my opinion, is a step ahead of the rest of the gardens in the world, not to mention the theme parks that it makes look like a deserted wasteland. Disney's 750 horticultural professionals plant three million bedding plants annually and tend 175,000 trees and more than four million shrubs. There are 13,000 rose bushes alone. Some 200 plants have been sculpted by topiary experts into different designs and there are at least 800 hanging baskets. Some 4,000 acres (1,600 hectares) are landscaped for the 47-square-mile (122-square-kilometer) resort's theme parks, hotel properties, golf courses, and campground, forming perhaps one of the largest public gardens to be found anywhere. Small wonder that all this requires 65,000 sprinkler heads on 2,000 miles (3,200 kilometers) of water pipes—and that the resort has a large, sophisticated nursery staffed by 30 professionals. It was Walt Disney himself who first planted the seed to create topiaries in Disney parks and resorts. Combining the talents of his film animators with those of park gardeners, Disney helped grow the topiary techniques to fit the whimsical theming of his first park, Disneyland. Walt Disney World Resort followed suit, beginning its topiary nursery three years before the resort’s 1971 grand opening. Topiary can be found in more than 100 designs, ranging from trees pruned in geometric shapes to the many topiary figures in the shape of Disney characters which dot the theme-park and resort landscape. Other flora include nearly 8,500 major interior plants, such as that seen in the lobby of Disney’s Polynesian Resort, and 800 hanging baskets adding color at eye level. Because the grass must be mowed at least twice (and often three times) each week, Walt Disney World gardeners figure if they were to mow in a straight line, the turf they cover would extend some 450,000 miles a year -- equal to 18 times around the earth at the equator. If you haven't been on a vacation to Disney World just to see the amazing plants and landscaping, I can honestly tell you that you are missing out. Give it a try!!
