Gold Upgrade When Companion is Child

I'm a GE and I've read all the posts regarding needing to divide my reservation in order to get upgraded, but I seem to be unable to divide it because my companion is one of my children. Is it possible to keep both of us on the same PNR and request standby upgrades for both of us at the gate. We are flying 8/2 and with 1 1/2 days left, there are still plenty of open seats in FC. Or is there some other way get the upgrades?
