With all the stresses of starting a new semester, I was looking forward to my first "Advanced Film Studies : Disney Studios" class very much. I was a little nervous that the teacher might be uptight, maybe not a real fan of Disney, etc. The last thing that I want is to waste my time and money on a class that puts down Walt Disney! :noWell, as I walk up to the classroom last night, I hear some LOUD man in the room, with a booming voice, greeting everyone as they come in to sign in. As I took my seat, I just sat there for a minute listening to him discussing fave Disney movies and he was SOOOOOO into it! He had a big framed poster of Steamboat Willie, a skeleton in the corner was wearing a Sorcerer Mickey hat, with a POC bandana draped suavely around his pelvis. tee hee! He gave us all a survey to find out our fave animated movie, live-action movie, fave character, song, etc. He asked whether we'd been to a park and which one, and what we expected from the class, etc. It was very hard to pick favorites, that's for sure. I had a hard time thinking up a live-action one but I think I finally chose Mary Poppins. There are modern films (POC) that I love, but the mix of animation and live-action is so cool!Anyway, he is, if possible, just as much into Disney as any of us! He's been teaching this class in one format or another for 20 years! Before VHS he had to write Disney and request tape reels to show in class! After talking very animatedly about all the fun we're going have, and some of the movies that we'll be watching (pinch me, I must be dreaming!), we watched : Walt - The Man Behind the Myth. It was commissioned by the Disney family and was scheduled to be shown on 9-11! It was never shown on TV. I'm sure that some of you have seen this, but I hadn't, and it was wonderful. (It is sold on Amazon.) There were many parts that had me a little teary. Ron (our professor) would interject comments about the people and places as the show played, he really seems to know his stuff. I stayed after class and talked with him for awhile. I told him how happy I am that he wasn't some stiff professor-type and that he seems to be as big a Disney-nut as I am. We got to talking about my upcoming trip (day after semester end) and he assured me that I'll love POFQ. Then we got to talking about EPCOT and all the wonderful food. He was so excited about everything, and I had a LOT of fun just listening to him! I had to get out of there before I stayed any later! (It was almost 10pm and I still had to drive 30 minutes to get home!) Definitely looking forward to next week's class!Oh yeah, he played the whole intro to the Mickey Mouse Club at the beginning of class, and he kept singing along! He was soooo into it that I, Miss Never-shed-a-tear-in-public, was getting teary! I even felt my lip quiver.......it was wonderful to meet someone who is unashamed to love Mickey! Here is a cool link that he suggested: Walt Disney Family Museum (
